CBSG publication awarded with the 2009 best student paper in Molecular Plant Pathology
The British Society for Plant Pathology has recently announced
that Dr. Pieter van Poppel is the 2009 prizewinner for the best
student paper published in the Society's journal Molecular Plant
Pathology. Pieter, whose PhD research was funded by CBSG, graduated
last February. The winning paper is entitled
'Recognition of Phytophthora infestans Avr4 by potato R4 is
triggered by C-terminal domains comprising W motifs' and
co-authored by Rays H.Y. Jiang, Jadwiga Zliwka and Francine Govers.
It is published in the September issue of MPP.
The criteria used to judge the best paper are a combination of scholarship, impact and novelty. MPP editor-in-chief Gary Foster presented the following jury report: 'For this particular paper it was good to see continuing research on such an important worldwide pathogen, as well as a broad spectrum of techniques undertaken by the student, from bioinformatics, gene analysis, molecular biology, to plant biology and of course molecular plant pathology. The paper particularly stood out as it was easy to follow and understand, with excellent presentation, and overall a joy to read. Congratulations!'.
As winner of the prize Pieter receives 250 UK pounds, two years free BSPP membership and the option of attending the BSPP meeting this September.
