CBSG: Perspective in Science on sex and fungal
invasion
A perspective in the Science issue of November 12 and written by
CBSG scientists Francine Govers and Gerco Angenent emphasizes the
impact of a novel finding by a Swiss-German team on two plant
receptor proteins that function as docking molecules for pollen
tubes and fungi. Because of their requirement for sex, the
seven-transmembane receptor and the receptor-like kinase are named
after Goddesses of Fertility but they also act as Trojan horses
that enable pathogenic fungi to invade plant tissues.
