CBSG Grand Opening a great success!
On Thursday, 26th November CBSG2012 held it's Grand Opening to
celebrate a second phase of financing for integrated plant genomics
research in The Netherlands. This afternoon and evening was
attended by about 100 CBSG-ers and invited colleagues from other
centres and related organisations. To emphasise that CBSG2012 was a
lot more than just Wageningen, and also to draw attention to our
non-research goal of reaching out to the broader communitity - and
especially the scientists of the future - this Opening was held at
the National Science Museum, NEMO in Amsterdam. The theme was
'Securing the Future' and the afternoon kicked off with an
acrobatic demonstration of how people can build a strong
relationship and rely on each other through trust and effective
communication. Subsequently, we had a number of viewpoints from our
colleagues in related fields about e.g. the future of the Life
Sciences and Plant Sciences in the Netherlands, given by the
Directors of NGI and The Plant Sciences Group of Wageningen
University and Research Centre respectively. The importance for
collaboration and finding common ground for multidisciplinary
research was emphasised by the Director of the Netherlands
Nutrigenomics Centre and Strategies for securing the future of our
Seed company partners was detailed by a representative of our
commercial partners. After presenting a very brief overview of the
CBSG programme and referring everyone to the new website for
further information, finally, to round off the formal programme,
Adjied Bakas, renowned Trend Watcher and author gave his views on
those global economic and societal aspects which are likely to
influence our lives over the next couple of decades. This very
lively and provocative presentation lead to much discussion during
an excellent dinner. The enthusiasm to go ahead for another 5 years
was clearly evident and this augurs well for major success in
CBSG2012.
